TREASURES OF NAPOLÉON
A leader in the tradition of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Charlemagne and the object of intense fascination, Napoléon Bonaparte remains an undeniably powerful and enigmatic figure of world history. We now have the rare opportunity to look into the private life of the Emperor of France through an exhibition that showcases some of his most personal possessions and the possessions of those closest to him.
Treasures of NAPOLÉON presents a wealth of historic artifacts, world-class artwork and unrivaled decorative arts together with a compelling story line that only Napoléon could invoke. Created from the extraordinary collection of First Empire authority and Napoléon expert, Pierre-Jean Chalençon, Treasures of NAPOLÉON exhibits not only the personal belongings of Napoléon but also some of the most famous depictions of the Emperor painted by some of the greatest artists of the time.
The exhibition includes paintings, sketches and sculptures by such greats as Gros, David, Canova, Gerard, Houdon, Fontaine, Chaudet, Delaroche and Vernet; as well as silver, porcelain, furniture, textiles and jewelry made by the finest artisans and manufacturers of the First Empire of France.
Alongside the stunning examples of art and craftsmanship of the Empire style, are some of the Emperor’s most intimate possessions: the earliest known letter hand written by him at age fourteen and his personal map of the French Empire at its zenith in 1812. Also included are a lock of hair from Empress Josephine Bonaparte and the monogrammed shirt and long johns he wore shortly before his death.
Treasures of NAPOLÉON offers a rare and entertaining experience for all types of viewers. The historic objects in the exhibit are rarely seen outside the walls of the most distinguished and celebrated museums and palaces of Europe. The exhibition provides unprecedented insights into the heart and mind of this complex and remarkable man. It allows viewers to see beyond
the “legend” of Napoléon Bonaparte and reveals Napoléon the person.
