Inspired by Liberace’s brilliant and lavish performances Liberace: Remixed embraces what the multi talented entertainer and philanthropist is most known for: his style and his extraordinary showmanship. The exhibition showcases many of the entertainer’s most extravagant costumes and stage props including sparkling cars, shimmering candelabras and sumptuously adorned pianos together with a wealth of documentary material.
In the spirit of Liberace’s performances the exhibition is presented as a remix; a series of theatrical, experiential and interactive environments. They reflect on the paradigm shifts in entertainment brought about by Liberace and illuminate his creative genius. Most importantly, they shed light on Liberace’s legacy which provided inspiration for the likes of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson and continues to set the stage for many contemporary musicians.
Liberace: Remixed touches on different periods of the entertainer’s life and career; from growing up during the depression era and playing in Milwaukee nightclubs, to performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, through his 1950’s television debut and his live shows at Radio City Music Hall and the great hotels of Las Vegas. It also takes a close look at the careful invention of the Liberace persona on and off stage, examining the difficult task of navigating personal challenges in the harsh spotlight of fame.
The exhibition, both educational and highly entertaining, interprets and mirrors Liberace’s innovative performances through lighting, musical score, sound and projections in a style that invites participation and provides personal, tangible and passionate experiences for visitors.
